Vizwriting – Factual TV for the curious: documentaries, science, history and news

Vizwriting in 4K: wildlife, landscapes and the biggest events at full resolution

Ultra HD costs nothing extra on any plan. Which footage rewards it, where the 4K versions sit in the line-up, and what the room needs to show them.

A Vizwriting subscription includes 4K on every plan. It pays off in two kinds of viewing: natural history, science and travel programs, where fine detail is the point, and the major sporting events that broadcasters produce in Ultra HD. A program filmed in HD stays HD, so each 4K version sits in the list beside its FHD and HD copies, and you choose channel by channel. The 4K versions are open in the Vizwriting free trial too.

UHD, or Ultra HD, is the broadcast name for 4K: 3840 by 2160 pixels, four times the count of a 1080p picture. Whether you notice depends on the screen and the distance. On a 55-inch television seen from the sofa, you will; on a phone, you will not.

Why Vizwriting UHD suits nature, science and travel footage

Because the subject holds still long enough for detail to register. 4K adds most where the camera lingers on texture: plumage, bark, fish scales, rock strata, frost on a tent at altitude.

Natural history crews work with long lenses and slow moves, science programs with macro shots of an insect’s eye or a crystal forming, travel crews with aerial passes over coastlines. All of it is fine detail at a moderate pace, which a 4K panel resolves and an HD one softens.

A news studio gains little. A presenter at a desk looks the same in HD, so for a bulletin the HD version is the sensible pick, and it costs your connection roughly a quarter as much. The factual side of the line-up as a whole, networks and news desks included, is mapped on the page about Vizwriting documentaries and factual channels.

Where the 4K versions sit in the line-up

4K turns up in five places; everything else runs in FHD or HD.

What you watchWhere the 4K isGood to know

Documentaries on demandThe library’s 4K sectionOnly titles that exist in 4K; the rest play in FHD or HD

Pay-per-viewBoxing, UFC and WWE cards4K on the event night itself
News desksUsually FHD or HDA studio picture gains little from 4K

A search for “4K” or “UHD” in the player’s live list usually brings the Ultra HD versions together, though naming varies by group. The full line-up by country and genre is in the Vizwriting channel list.

The sporting events that arrive in 4K

Ultra HD production is expensive, so broadcasters save it for the occasions with the largest audiences. In American sport, that means NFL games from FOX and CBS, and the national NBA and NHL broadcasts. In soccer, it means the Champions League and the Premier League matches that Sky Sports and TNT Sports produce in UHD. Then come Formula 1, the majors in golf and the grand slams in tennis.

These broadcasts share something with a wildlife film: wide shots packed with small detail, from the grain of a fairway to faces at the far end of a stadium. League-by-league coverage is on the live sports page.

What the room needs for a 4K nature program

Four things: a steady connection, a box or TV that decodes 4K, a player set to hardware decoding, and a 4K television.

  • The connection. About 25 Mbps held steady for each 4K stream, and 50 Mbps on a wired line if the rest of the house is online too. A network cable to the box takes Wi-Fi out of the question.
  • The box or TV. Fire TV Stick 4K Max, Nvidia Shield TV, Formuler Z11 Pro Max or Apple TV 4K, or a Sony, Samsung or LG 4K television built from 2019 on. Older Firesticks without 4K in the model name, and most budget Android boxes, send 1080p at most. One trap: the Fire TV Stick 4K Select is built on Vega OS, which accepts no sideloaded players, so pick a Fire OS model.
  • The player. TiviMate or IPTV Smarters Pro, with hardware decoding switched on in its settings.
  • The television. A 4K panel on an HDMI 2.0 input, and an HDR panel if you want HDR.

Each device has its own walkthrough among the setup guides by device. For the most common 4K box, follow the steps to install Vizwriting on a Fire TV Stick, Downloader and developer options included.

HDR on sunsets, lava and night skies

HDR is separate from 4K. It widens the gap between the darkest and brightest parts of the picture: a sunrise over a desert, lava at night, the northern lights. You see it when three things agree: the title carries HDR, the player and box pass it on, and the TV accepts HDR on that HDMI input. If one of the three says no, you get standard dynamic range, and nothing is wrong.

When the HD version is the better choice

Choose HD on small screens, on a second screen playing at the same time, and on a box that reaches the router over weak Wi-Fi.

  • The kitchen tablet with the news on: HD. At that size 4K is invisible.
  • A second stream while the main TV plays 4K: HD on the second screen leaves the line free for the first. Two screens at once need a two-connection plan, $25 for a month or $119 for the year.
  • A big final, with the box on Wi-Fi: start in HD, and save 4K for after you have run a cable.

To catch a nature program at its start, the Vizwriting TV guide shows what each 4K channel has on now and next. If it has already aired, the catch-up archive may still hold it, on channels that keep one. Every term and connection count is on the page of Vizwriting plans and prices.

Vizwriting 4K and UHD: common questions

Does Vizwriting have 4K channels?

Yes. The line-up carries 4K versions of nature and travel channels, 4K movie channels and the major sporting events that broadcasters produce in Ultra HD, each listed next to an HD version of the same channel. The on-demand library adds a 4K section. Programs made in HD play in FHD or HD, since a sharper copy cannot be created after the fact.

Is Vizwriting UHD the same as 4K?

Yes. UHD, short for Ultra HD, is the broadcast name for the same 3840 by 2160 picture, and channel names may carry either tag. FHD is 1920 by 1080. A channel marked UHD is only as detailed as what was filmed, which is why the 4K versions in the line-up are the events and programs produced in 4K.

Does Vizwriting 4K cost more?

No. 4K is part of every plan and of the 24-hour free trial, and there is no Ultra HD tier. The only differences between plans are the term and the number of screens playing together: one connection is $15 for a month or $69 for 12 months, and nothing renews automatically.

What internet speed does Vizwriting 4K need?

Around 25 Mbps for each 4K stream, held steady rather than reached in bursts. When the rest of the household is online too, 50 Mbps gives comfortable headroom. A network cable from the router to the box serves 4K better than Wi-Fi, because a steady line matters more than the number a speed test shows.

Which device shows Vizwriting in 4K best?

A dedicated 4K streaming box: the Nvidia Shield TV, Apple TV 4K, Fire TV Stick 4K Max or Formuler Z11 Pro Max, running TiviMate or IPTV Smarters Pro with hardware decoding on. A 4K Samsung, LG or Sony television from 2019 onward manages too. A Firestick from before the 4K models, like most bargain Android boxes, cannot output more than 1080p.

Why does a 4K channel stutter when the HD one plays smoothly?

The 4K version asks the connection for three to four times as much data, so it is the first to falter when the line is uneven. Switch the player to hardware decoding, give the box a cable instead of Wi-Fi, and watch the HD version through the busiest evening hour. Switch back to 4K for the next nature program.
